TOPIC: Quality and the Circular Economy: Back to the Future
ABSTRACT: An important emerging model for sustainability is the circular economy, which has been adopted by many companies worldwide. This model abandons the conventional make-use-discard linear approach and instead adopts three principles: (a) design out waste and pollution, (b) keep products and materials in use, and (c) regenerate natural systems. The circular approach has several important implications for quality managers such as zero waste, design for disassembly and repair, remanufacturing, and ecological integration. In this fun and interactive presentation we describe the circular economic approach in detail, explore the important implications of this model for quality managers, and examine several case studies that illustrate how companies are using this approach to meet the challenges of sustainable operations.
